Get your loved one out of there if they are safe to be around again!

1.       Know your rights.

2.       Quietly take note of your rights that are being violated.

3.       Participate in the treatment plan as much as possible so that you can be released as soon as possible.

4.       Do not just sign a paper, right your reason down calmly. If you disagree, write it before you sign your signature for your voice to go on hospital record.

5.       Keep track of the medications you are given for your own records.

6.       Notice patterns of inconsistent dosaging and timing to demonstrate if the hospital is invested in your recovery.

7.       Know that a doctor is still a stranger who does not know you, your situation, your personality, your culture, your faith, your preferences, and unfortunately sometimes your rights.

8.       Prayerfully tell your doctor what you need in order to build trust as a patient. Be careful, this could backfire on you if you are unhealthy and have an unhealthy request.

9.       Request a loved one who knows you sit with the assessing doctor. Have your loved one speak up for you.

10.   Keep your loved one informed about what is going on even if they are leery because of your symptoms. Still tell them your side. Your voice matters.

11.   Tell the staff members your point of view, even your pain as the Lord leads. They may be in your corner when you need them. The nurses, the techs, the therapist may notice your humanity and your sanity first.

12.   Stay showered and groomed to the best of your ability to look like you have the soundness of mind. Ask a loved one to bring you proper tools to keep your natural hair groomed and maintained.

13.   Ask a loved one to bring you clothes so you can present your best self during medical evaluations.

14.   Participate in art therapy and create projects that express hope and light.

15.   Have empathy for all staff including the doctors. Verbalizing yourself in their shoes goes a long way. Let it be sincere, this is greater than sanity.

16.   Remember no one in there knows you. You have to introduce your best self, everyday, all day, until you are released.

17.   Journal as much as possible so you can verbalize the breakthrough that you actually need which lead to you to having the symptoms of you being a candidate for the hospital. You still owe it to yourself to grow and heal emotionally while you are kept in the hospital, even against your will. Make it count. Go deep. Break free from the strongholds that bind you, with scripture, faith, prayer and the Lord.

18.   Remember who you are, what God has called you to do, what He said about you, what He showed you will do.

19.   Keep the faith.

20.   Do not let toxic people visit you while you assess the situation and strategize your healing and plan of explanations that will help you break free from the prison of unjust mental hospitalization. © Alicea Joy Davis 2020. All rights reserved worldwide.
